The higher stealth and Aiming skill you have the better chance you have to getting food. Trapping is a survivalist skill in Project Zomboid. Make a bow and some arrows and make bird/duck calls and hunt for them. I think they're pretty balanced all in all, just different strengths and weaknesses.
